¹And so it was, when King Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lᴏʀᴅ. ²Then he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz. ³And they said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah: ‘This day is a day of trouble, and rebuke, and blasphemy; for the children have come to birth, but there is no strength to bring them forth. ⁴It may be that the Lᴏʀᴅ your God will hear all the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to reproach the living God, and will rebuke the words which the Lᴏʀᴅ your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’ ” ⁵So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah. ⁶And Isaiah said to them, “Thus you shall say to your master, ‘Thus says the Lᴏʀᴅ: “Do not be afraid of the words which you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me. ⁷Surely I will send a spirit upon him, and he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.” ‘ ” ⁸Then the Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah, for he heard that he had departed from Lachish. ⁹And the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, “Look, he has come out to make war with you.” So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, ¹⁰“Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying: ‘Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, “Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” ¹¹Look! You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by utterly destroying them; and shall you be delivered? ¹²Have the gods of the nations delivered those whom my fathers have destroyed, Gozan and Haran and Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar? ¹³Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?’ ” ¹⁴And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lᴏʀᴅ, and spread it before the Lᴏʀᴅ. ¹⁵Then Hezekiah prayed before the Lᴏʀᴅ, and said: “O Lᴏʀᴅ God of Israel, the One who dwells between the cherubim, You are God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. ¹⁶Incline Your ear, O Lᴏʀᴅ, and hear; open Your eyes, O Lᴏʀᴅ, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to reproach the living God. ¹⁷Truly, Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands, ¹⁸and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were not gods, but the work of men’s hands—wood and stone. Therefore they destroyed them. ¹⁹Now therefore, O Lᴏʀᴅ our God, I pray, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the Lᴏʀᴅ God, You alone.” ²⁰Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says the Lᴏʀᴅ God of Israel: ‘Because you have prayed to Me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, I have heard.’ ²¹This is the word which the Lᴏʀᴅ has spoken concerning him: ‘The virgin, the daughter of Zion, Has despised you, laughed you to scorn; The daughter of Jerusalem Has shaken her head behind your back! ²²‘Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice, And lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel. ²³By your messengers you have reproached the Lᴏʀᴅ, And said: “By the multitude of my chariots I have come up to the height of the mountains, To the limits of Lebanon; I will cut down its tall cedars And its choice cypress trees; I will enter the extremity of its borders, To its fruitful forest. ²⁴I have dug and drunk strange water, And with the soles of my feet I have dried up All the brooks of defense.” ²⁵‘Did you not hear long ago How I made it, From ancient times that I formed it? Now I have brought it to pass, That you should be For crushing fortified cities into heaps of ruins. ²⁶Therefore their inhabitants had little power; They were dismayed and confounded; They were as the grass of the field And the green herb, As the grass on the housetops And grain blighted before it is grown. ²⁷‘But I know your dwelling place, Your going out and your coming in, And your rage against Me. ²⁸Because your rage against Me and your tumult Have come up to My ears, Therefore I will put My hook in your nose And My bridle in your lips, And I will turn you back By the way which you came. ²⁹‘This shall be a sign to you: You shall eat this year such as grows of itself, And in the second year what springs from the same; Also in the third year sow and reap, Plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them. ³⁰And the remnant who have escaped of the house of Judah Shall again take root downward, And bear fruit upward. ³¹For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, And those who escape from Mount Zion. The zeal of the Lᴏʀᴅ of hosts will do this.’ ³²“Therefore thus says the Lᴏʀᴅ concerning the king of Assyria: ‘He shall not come into this city, Nor shoot an arrow there, Nor come before it with shield, Nor build a siege mound against it. ³³By the way that he came, By the same shall he return; And he shall not come into this city,’ Says the Lᴏʀᴅ. ³⁴‘For I will defend this city, to save it For My own sake and for My servant David’s sake.’ ” ³⁵And it came to pass on a certain night that the angel of the Lᴏʀᴅ went out, and killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses—all dead. ³⁶So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went away, returned home, and remained at Nineveh. ³⁷Now it came to pass, as he was worshiping in the temple of Nisroch his god, that his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him down with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Then Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.

¹God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, ²has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; ³who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, ⁴having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. ⁵For to which of the angels did He ever say: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again: “I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son”? ⁶But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all the angels of God worship Him.” ⁷And of the angels He says: “Who makes His angels spirits And His ministers a flame of fire.” ⁸But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom. ⁹You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.” ¹⁰And: “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. ¹¹They will perish, but You remain; And they will all grow old like a garment; ¹²Like a cloak You will fold them up, And they will be changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not fail.” ¹³But to which of the angels has He ever said: “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”? ¹⁴Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?

¹“Ephraim feeds on the wind, And pursues the east wind; He daily increases lies and desolation. Also they make a covenant with the Assyrians, And oil is carried to Egypt. ²“The Lᴏʀᴅ also brings a charge against Judah, And will punish Jacob according to his ways; According to his deeds He will recompense him. ³He took his brother by the heel in the womb, And in his strength he struggled with God. ⁴Yes, he struggled with the Angel and prevailed; He wept, and sought favor from Him. He found Him in Bethel, And there He spoke to us— ⁵That is, the Lᴏʀᴅ God of hosts. The Lᴏʀᴅ is His memorable name. ⁶So you, by the help of your God, return; Observe mercy and justice, And wait on your God continually. ⁷“A cunning Canaanite! Deceitful scales are in his hand; He loves to oppress. ⁸And Ephraim said, ‘Surely I have become rich, I have found wealth for myself; In all my labors They shall find in me no iniquity that is sin.’ ⁹“But I am the Lᴏʀᴅ your God, Ever since the land of Egypt; I will again make you dwell in tents, As in the days of the appointed feast. ¹⁰I have also spoken by the prophets, And have multiplied visions; I have given symbols through the witness of the prophets.” ¹¹Though Gilead has idols— Surely they are vanity— Though they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal, Indeed their altars shall be heaps in the furrows of the field. ¹²Jacob fled to the country of Syria; Israel served for a spouse, And for a wife he tended sheep. ¹³By a prophet the Lᴏʀᴅ brought Israel out of Egypt, And by a prophet he was preserved. ¹⁴Ephraim provoked Him to anger most bitterly; Therefore his Lord will leave the guilt of his bloodshed upon him, And return his reproach upon him.

¹Praise the Lᴏʀᴅ! Praise the name of the Lᴏʀᴅ; Praise Him, O you servants of the Lᴏʀᴅ! ²You who stand in the house of the Lᴏʀᴅ, In the courts of the house of our God, ³Praise the Lᴏʀᴅ, for the Lᴏʀᴅ is good; Sing praises to His name, for it is pleasant. ⁴For the Lᴏʀᴅ has chosen Jacob for Himself, Israel for His special treasure. ⁵For I know that the Lᴏʀᴅ is great, And our Lord is above all gods. ⁶Whatever the Lᴏʀᴅ pleases He does, In heaven and in earth, In the seas and in all deep places. ⁷He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain; He brings the wind out of His treasuries. ⁸He destroyed the firstborn of Egypt, Both of man and beast. ⁹He sent signs and wonders into the midst of you, O Egypt, Upon Pharaoh and all his servants. ¹⁰He defeated many nations And slew mighty kings— ¹¹Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan, And all the kingdoms of Canaan— ¹²And gave their land as a heritage, A heritage to Israel His people. ¹³Your name, O Lᴏʀᴅ, endures forever, Your fame, O Lᴏʀᴅ, throughout all generations. ¹⁴For the Lᴏʀᴅ will judge His people, And He will have compassion on His servants. ¹⁵The idols of the nations are silver and gold, The work of men’s hands. ¹⁶They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see; ¹⁷They have ears, but they do not hear; Nor is there any breath in their mouths. ¹⁸Those who make them are like them; So is everyone who trusts in them. ¹⁹Bless the Lᴏʀᴅ, O house of Israel! Bless the Lᴏʀᴅ, O house of Aaron! ²⁰Bless the Lᴏʀᴅ, O house of Levi! You who fear the Lᴏʀᴅ, bless the Lᴏʀᴅ! ²¹Blessed be the Lᴏʀᴅ out of Zion, Who dwells in Jerusalem! Praise the Lᴏʀᴅ!

¹Oh, give thanks to the Lᴏʀᴅ, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. ²Oh, give thanks to the God of gods! For His mercy endures forever. ³Oh, give thanks to the Lᴏʀᴅ of lords! For His mercy endures forever: ⁴To Him who alone does great wonders, For His mercy endures forever; ⁵To Him who by wisdom made the heavens, For His mercy endures forever; ⁶To Him who laid out the earth above the waters, For His mercy endures forever; ⁷To Him who made great lights, For His mercy endures forever— ⁸The sun to rule by day, For His mercy endures forever; ⁹The moon and stars to rule by night, For His mercy endures forever. ¹⁰To Him who struck Egypt in their firstborn, For His mercy endures forever; ¹¹And brought out Israel from among them, For His mercy endures forever; ¹²With a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm, For His mercy endures forever; ¹³To Him who divided the Red Sea in two, For His mercy endures forever; ¹⁴And made Israel pass through the midst of it, For His mercy endures forever; ¹⁵But overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea, For His mercy endures forever; ¹⁶To Him who led His people through the wilderness, For His mercy endures forever; ¹⁷To Him who struck down great kings, For His mercy endures forever; ¹⁸And slew famous kings, For His mercy endures forever— ¹⁹Sihon king of the Amorites, For His mercy endures forever; ²⁰And Og king of Bashan, For His mercy endures forever— ²¹And gave their land as a heritage, For His mercy endures forever; ²²A heritage to Israel His servant, For His mercy endures forever. ²³Who remembered us in our lowly state, For His mercy endures forever; ²⁴And rescued us from our enemies, For His mercy endures forever; ²⁵Who gives food to all flesh, For His mercy endures forever. ²⁶Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven! For His mercy endures forever.
