¹But the children of Israel committed a trespass regarding the accursed things, for Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the Lᴏʀᴅ burned against the children of Israel. ²Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, “Go up and spy out the country.” So the men went up and spied out Ai. ³And they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not weary all the people there, for the people of Ai are few.” ⁴So about three thousand men went up there from the people, but they fled before the men of Ai. ⁵And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six men, for they chased them from before the gate as far as Shebarim, and struck them down on the descent; therefore the hearts of the people melted and became like water. ⁶Then Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lᴏʀᴅ until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads. ⁷And Joshua said, “Alas, Lᴏʀᴅ God, why have You brought this people over the Jordan at all—to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh, that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan! ⁸O Lᴏʀᴅ, what shall I say when Israel turns its back before its enemies? ⁹For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear it, and surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name?” ¹⁰So the Lᴏʀᴅ said to Joshua: “Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face? ¹¹Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff. ¹²Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you. ¹³Get up, sanctify the people, and say, ‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the Lᴏʀᴅ God of Israel: “There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you.” ¹⁴In the morning therefore you shall be brought according to your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which the Lᴏʀᴅ takes shall come according to families; and the family which the Lᴏʀᴅ takes shall come by households; and the household which the Lᴏʀᴅ takes shall come man by man. ¹⁵Then it shall be that he who is taken with the accursed thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the Lᴏʀᴅ, and because he has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.’ ” ¹⁶So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken. ¹⁷He brought the clan of Judah, and he took the family of the Zarhites; and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man, and Zabdi was taken. ¹⁸Then he brought his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. ¹⁹Now Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I beg you, give glory to the Lᴏʀᴅ God of Israel, and make confession to Him, and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.” ²⁰And Achan answered Joshua and said, “Indeed I have sinned against the Lᴏʀᴅ God of Israel, and this is what I have done: ²¹“When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.” ²²So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver under it. ²³And they took them from the midst of the tent, brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lᴏʀᴅ. ²⁴Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the garment, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had, and they brought them to the Valley of Achor. ²⁵And Joshua said, “Why have you troubled us? The Lᴏʀᴅ will trouble you this day.” So all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones. ²⁶Then they raised over him a great heap of stones, still there to this day. So the Lᴏʀᴅ turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Achor to this day.

¹By the rivers of Babylon, There we sat down, yea, we wept When we remembered Zion. ²We hung our harps Upon the willows in the midst of it. ³For there those who carried us away captive asked of us a song, And those who plundered us requested mirth, Saying, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!” ⁴How shall we sing the Lᴏʀᴅ’s song In a foreign land? ⁵If I forget you, O Jerusalem, Let my right hand forget its skill! ⁶If I do not remember you, Let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth— If I do not exalt Jerusalem Above my chief joy. ⁷Remember, O Lᴏʀᴅ, against the sons of Edom The day of Jerusalem, Who said, “Raze it, raze it, To its very foundation!” ⁸O daughter of Babylon, who are to be destroyed, Happy the one who repays you as you have served us! ⁹Happy the one who takes and dashes Your little ones against the rock!

¹A Psalm of David. I will praise You with my whole heart; Before the gods I will sing praises to You. ²I will worship toward Your holy temple, And praise Your name For Your lovingkindness and Your truth; For You have magnified Your word above all Your name. ³In the day when I cried out, You answered me, And made me bold with strength in my soul. ⁴All the kings of the earth shall praise You, O Lᴏʀᴅ, When they hear the words of Your mouth. ⁵Yes, they shall sing of the ways of the Lᴏʀᴅ, For great is the glory of the Lᴏʀᴅ. ⁶Though the Lᴏʀᴅ is on high, Yet He regards the lowly; But the proud He knows from afar. ⁷Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me; You will stretch out Your hand Against the wrath of my enemies, And Your right hand will save me. ⁸The Lᴏʀᴅ will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O Lᴏʀᴅ, endures forever; Do not forsake the works of Your hands.

¹The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, ²to whom the word of the Lᴏʀᴅ came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. ³It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month. ⁴Then the word of the Lᴏʀᴅ came to me, saying: ⁵“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” ⁶Then said I: “Ah, Lᴏʀᴅ God! Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.” ⁷But the Lᴏʀᴅ said to me: “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’ For you shall go to all to whom I send you, And whatever I command you, you shall speak. ⁸Do not be afraid of their faces, For I am with you to deliver you,” says the Lᴏʀᴅ. ⁹Then the Lᴏʀᴅ put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lᴏʀᴅ said to me: “Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. ¹⁰See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, To root out and to pull down, To destroy and to throw down, To build and to plant.” ¹¹Moreover the word of the Lᴏʀᴅ came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see a branch of an almond tree.” ¹²Then the Lᴏʀᴅ said to me, “You have seen well, for I am ready to perform My word.” ¹³And the word of the Lᴏʀᴅ came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a boiling pot, and it is facing away from the north.” ¹⁴Then the Lᴏʀᴅ said to me: “Out of the north calamity shall break forth On all the inhabitants of the land. ¹⁵For behold, I am calling All the families of the kingdoms of the north,” says the Lᴏʀᴅ; “They shall come and each one set his throne At the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, Against all its walls all around, And against all the cities of Judah. ¹⁶I will utter My judgments Against them concerning all their wickedness, Because they have forsaken Me, Burned incense to other gods, And worshiped the works of their own hands. ¹⁷“Therefore prepare yourself and arise, And speak to them all that I command you. Do not be dismayed before their faces, Lest I dismay you before them. ¹⁸For behold, I have made you this day A fortified city and an iron pillar, And bronze walls against the whole land— Against the kings of Judah, Against its princes, Against its priests, And against the people of the land. ¹⁹They will fight against you, But they shall not prevail against you. For I am with you,” says the Lᴏʀᴅ, “to deliver you.”

¹Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying, ²“Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.” ³He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? ⁴For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ ⁵But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”— ⁶then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. ⁷Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: ⁸‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. ⁹And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ” ¹⁰When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear and understand: ¹¹Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.” ¹²Then His disciples came and said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” ¹³But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. ¹⁴Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.” ¹⁵Then Peter answered and said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.” ¹⁶So Jesus said, “Are you also still without understanding? ¹⁷Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? ¹⁸But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. ¹⁹For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. ²⁰These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.” ²¹Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. ²²And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” ²³But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.” ²⁴But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” ²⁵Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” ²⁶But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” ²⁷And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” ²⁸Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour. ²⁹Jesus departed from there, skirted the Sea of Galilee, and went up on the mountain and sat down there. ³⁰Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus’ feet, and He healed them. ³¹So the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel. ³²Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” ³³Then His disciples said to Him, “Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?” ³⁴Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few little fish.” ³⁵So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. ³⁶And He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude. ³⁷So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left. ³⁸Now those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. ³⁹And He sent away the multitude, got into the boat, and came to the region of Magdala.
